TV Video vs. Web Video

There are many differences, advantages, as well as disadvantages to using video both online and on television. Although television video is often viewed as higher quality than the web, it is not always better.

Web video may not necessarily be quite as clear or considered as high in quality as television, but it can certainly be just as, or sometimes even more, effective.

There are many obvious advantages that web videos have over television videos:

  • Instant availability: thanks to wireless devices, consumers are now able to access videos anywhere, at any time of day.

  • More interactive: online videos sometimes allow viewers to click on links or take part in discussion, allowing for a more personal and interactive feeling.

  • Viewers are choosing to watch specific videos: unlike many television ads, viewers online are choosing to watch specific ads, which means usually means they are interested in what they are watching.

As the popularity of promotional videos online increases, advertisers fear that less television ads are being viewed. With the introduction of DVRs such as TiVO, viewers are given the option to skip over advertisements, which many advertisers believe is exactly what they are doing. About 14 percent of the nation's television homes have DVRs and advertisers believe that the majority of them are skipping through ads. With the growing number of households purchasing DVRs, more advertisers are turning to web video to get their messages to the public, as many are fearful that the number of television advertisement viewers will only continue to decrease.

There are several factors that differentiate web videos from television videos. The quality of the videos can differ, depending on the types of monitors being purchased. Production of television video also differs substantially from that of web video, and the costs can vary.

Quality
T he quality of web videos is one thing that man consumers feel is not up to standards to that of television. Both of these types of videos can differ in quality depending on the format used to create the video, and the types of screens they are being watched on.

In the past, there was a considerable difference in the quality of web videos versus the quality of television; however, with today’s new technologies the differences are slowly becoming less noticeable.

High definition television is the newest phenomenon of television. With HDTV you receive about six times sharper of a picture than you would with a standard broadcast. This is largely due to the fact that HD quality television has a resolution of 1080i and 720p, compared to the resolution of standard television which is 768i and 576p.

When HDTV was first introduced, this picture quality was something far more advanced than anything else. Standard web videos were nowhere near this.

Until recently, high definition was something that very few people had and that was only offered on television. It has now exploded in popularity, and is beginning to take over the internet.

Most HD quality videos online are only available after being downloaded and not immediately available for viewing. Although that is quickly changing thanks to the introduction of programs such as QuickTime7, which is making it more possible for HD quality videos to be available through streaming video. However high definition monitors, like televisions screens, are needed in order to view any HD videos.

Although not everyone has access to a high definition monitor, the quality of web videos on a standard monitor can still be very high. The transfer rate of today’s considerably high quality web videos is about 1.5Mbitps, compared to 3Mbitps per HDTV quality.

Filming in HD can be very costly, considering a high definition camera is needed in order to get HD quality video. Many filmmakers, therefore, choose to film their productions with a standard digital video recorder. These cameras are still perfectly capable of producing quality work.

Quality of a web video can also depend on where it is being viewed, which ultimately depends on the videos format. Many videos are viewed using Flash players. The most common format is 320 by 240 pixels using 25 frames per second and broadcast at a transfer rate of 300kbps. Other commonly used video players such as Windows Media Player, Realplayer or Quicktime player, play videos of similar quality.

Production
Before shooting any video, whether it is for television or for the web, a plan is always needed. A good plan will help structure a video and allow filming to run smoothly. The type of video being made, the format that is going to be used, and the number of shots that will be taken are all things that should be considered before filming.

Depending on the quality of web video being produced, there are different aspects that need to be considered. Many people may choose to shoot using a single person and a handheld camera. However some people may choose to go a more in depth in their production techniques, perhaps using several actors, props, and high definition cameras.

It costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce a video for television. High quality cameras, lighting, and sound equipment are often used, and several professionals are hired to operate each type of equipment. In some cases there can be several cameras used in one take, which means several camera men will be needed to operate them. Professional actors must be hired, and expensive sets, props, and special effects are often used.

It often takes several days to shoot an ad for television, and every minute is costly. After the shooting process is complete, a professional must edit the video, using expensive video editing equipment and sometimes taking several days. These factors all ad up to the reason why the average production cost of a 30-second television commercial is $300 000.

Web videos on the other hand, can be shot at just a fraction of these costs. The one benefit to shooting video for the web is that most audiences expect web videos to have somewhat of an amateur aesthetic to them. Videos can be created with low production costs, and still be effective.

As in videos for television, it is important that proper lighting is used, and that the sound is strong, however web video producers are not normally expected to go to the extent of television producers.

Online videos do not always need to be shot using the most expensive cameras. A simple handheld digital video recorder can be effective in creating quality videos for the web. A well lit room can sometimes be all that is needed to capture the proper lighting, and a standard microphone is often quite effective.

After the video is shot, it can easily be edited by the filmmaker using simple computer video editing programs such as iMovie, Windows movie maker, or FinalCutPro.
These are basic video editing programs available on most computers that the average person is perfectly capable of using.

Producing a video for the web does not have to be difficult. It does not require the same resources that would be required to produce a video for television. Online videos can be shot at low costs, using inexpensive equipment and still be effective. The wonderful thing about web video is that it gives the average person the opportunity to become a film producer, which is an opportunity that most people would never receive from television.
